How to Write a Paper Topic Proposal - Thesis Statement, DEAN S BOOK w, writing a paper proposal.3/29/2017 I propose that each student make an artistic collage to be presented to the class that will symbolize the context, audience, setting, structure or any key ideas found in one of the readings this semester. Students who make a collage will be able to drop the lowest quiz grade. The students will have one week from the announcement of the project to complete the collage and prepare a presentation for it. Each student must choose one reading that we have done so far or will read in the future elementary essays topics, and no two students may choose the same work. Conflict with students wanting to present the same work will be resolved by a first come first serve basis. The students will be given a rubric with the exact requirements of the project and what the purpose of the project is. This is the most important part of your paper in some respects. You need to both introduce the topic and show the audience why they should care about this topic. It’s often helpful to begin with an interesting fact, statistic, or anecdote to grab the reader’s attention. The challenge in writing a proposal resides in its structure. Skills for Successful Completion
One last tough. Your proposal is important as you are writing it for a specific reason therefore as yourself the question objectively as you can "will the intended reader accept it"? If you have a slight hesitation review it again and try to find the weak point and rewrite it to give it strength. For the writer it is important that it be clear, to the point and as concise as possible. Thanks for your help! Modler, David. Big Bug. Photograph.Kronos Art Gallery. [Add in your professor’s name.] If you thought you would be able to get through college without much writing, you may find yourself asking, “Isn’t writing a research paper enough?” No. In many cases, you will need to write a research paper proposal before you write your actual paper. Ultimately, your professors will grade your final paper on your ability to interpret and intelligently discuss your topic and be able backup your findings with solid evidence. To be able to achieve this goal, you need to provide evidence that you are on the right path with a well thought out research paper proposal. Date. What will be some of the sections and subsections of your argument? What is your strategy for the way your paper will proceed? You should describe what you plan to use in the text of your essay as background and as evidence. If your project is comparing the image of the ideal mother in the 1950s and the 1970s, your background will include historical discussions of the family, gender relations, the economy and the politics of the two periods. Your evidence may include portraits of motherhood in film, television or novels, etiquette guidebooks, or countless other observable phenomena. The project comps poses unique challenges. As with the essay comps, you must demonstrate that you have an interdisciplinary, American Studies research question. But you must go further to provide a compelling argument that a creative or service learning/community engagement approach is the right way to answer your question. Further still, your proposal must provide satisfactory evidence that you possess the relevant logistic, technical, artistic, theoretical, and/or ethnographic expertise to successfully complete the proposed project. Project proposals must also include a second signature: that of a Technical Advisor with an expertise in the appropriate technical details of production. Students are especially cautioned that the proposed creative work or service project must clearly engage American Studies. Project comps include an accompanying reflective essay in which students provide more detailed consideration of their work as an American Studies enterprise writing academic essays for money, explicitly explain any embedded connections, and situate their work within American Studies questions and methods. The proposal can be thought of as a contract. The student puts forward a proposal for a research project and the American Studies program accepts or rejects the proposal. If it is accepted, the Program is agreeing to “pay” three credits (American Studies 400) upon satisfactory completion of the project. The skill of writing a proposal is very similar to that of writing grant proposals. Funding sources offer money for all kinds of topics and endeavors. There are far more applicants than dollars and those that are funded are doable by you and are worth doing . The prospectus must be typed and double-spaced, coherently organized, well-written, and honest about areas that are not fully developed. The audience is not your advisor or a specialist in your field; rather, it is a panel of faculty members in the American Studies program whose interests may be outside your fields. Your advisor(s) cigarette smoking should not be banned essay, however doing my homework, is your best source of advice for successfully completing a proposal. Examples of successful proposals done by previous students in the program are available in the E-reserves section of the Gould Library page under AS 400. 5) METHODS OF INVESTIGATION • Discuss why someone outside your focused area of interest should read your work. What intrinsic value does your research have for the lay world? Here again you are addressing the question of whether this research is worth doing. Working closely with your AMST 399 professor and your advisor on multiple drafts of the proposal is an important aspect of this process. The student and advisor should agree on a schedule for submission of drafts. Because the faculty committee will need to read all of the proposals, discuss them, and reach a decision in a very short time, no feedback will be given other than Approved or Rejected. There will be no appeals on the decision of the committee. The preferred format of the prospectus is as follows: In my review, I will discuss three common geophysical precursors: ground uplift and tilt, increases in radon emissions, and changes in the electrical resistivity of rocks. Earthquakes occur in five stages as there is a build up of elastic strain within faults in the earth, followed by the development of cracks in the rocks, then the influx of water into those cracks. The fourth stage is the actual rupture of the fault and the release of seismic waves. The fifth stage is the sudden drop in stress in the fault. In this stage writing a position paper, aftershocks occur. More than 30,000 metric tons of nuclear waste have arisen from U.S. commercial reactors as well as high level nuclear weapons waste well written essay introduction, such as uranium and plutonium [Roush, 1995]. This document has proposed research to evaluate the possibility of using Yucca Mountain as a possible repository for this spent nuclear fuel. The proposed research will achieve the following goals: (1) explain the criteria necessary to make a suitable high level radioactive waste repository, and (2) determine if Yucca Mountain meets these criteria. The research will include a formal presentation on November 11 and a formal report on December 5. (1) explain the criteria for a suitable repository of high-level radioactive waste; and Taubes, G. "Blowup at Yucca Mountain," Science, vol.268, (June 1995), pp. 1836-1839. On January 1, 1998, the Department of Energy (DOE) must accept spent nuclear fuel from commercial plants for permanent storage [Clark, 1997]. However how to write an abstract for dissertation, the DOE is undecided on where to put this high level radioactive waste. Yucca Mountain, located in Nevada, is a proposed site. Figure 1. Schedule for completion of literature review. The two triangles represent milestones for the project, the first being the formal presentation on November 11, 1996, and the second being the formal report on December 6 sample book report outline, 1996. Deshpande, Prof. B. G. Earthquakes, Animals and Man (Pune, India: The Maharashtra Association for the Cultivation of Science, 1987). Some earthquakes have been successfully predicted. One of the most famous predictions was the Haicheng Prediction in China. In 1970, Chinese scientists targeted the Liaoning Province as a site with potential for a large earthquake. These scientists felt that an earthquake would occur there in 1974 or 1975. On December 20, 1974, an earthquake warning was issued. Two days later, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck the Liaoning Province; however essay for technology communication, further monitoring suggested a larger earthquake was imminent [Mileti and others, 1981]. On February 4, 1975, the Chinese issued a warning that an earthquake would strike Haicheng within 24 hours [Bolt, 1993]. The people in Haicheng were evacuated, and about 5.5 hours later, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake shook the city of Haicheng. If the people hadn't been evacuated, the death toll could have exceeded 100,000. A second goal of my literature review is to evaluate Yucca Mountain meets those criteria. I will base my evaluation on the sources mentioned above as well as specific Environmental Protection Agency standards. I also intend to research the validity of possible environmental disasters, such as the explosion theory. To accomplish this goal, I will rely on the paper presented by Clark [1997], and on the book Blowup at Yucca Mountain [Taubes, 1995]. Meyer, Larry L. California Quake (Nashville: Sherbourne Press, 1977). This section presents my schedule, costs, and qualifications for completing the proposed research. This research culminates in a formal report, which will be completed by December 5, 1997. To reach this goal, I will follow the schedule presented in Figure 1. Since I already possess literature on the subject of Yucca Mountain as a nuclear waste site, most of my time will be spent sorting through the literature to find key results, and presenting those results to the audience. Roush, W. "Can Nuclear Waste Keep Yucca Mountain Dry-and Safe?" Science, vol. 270, (December 1995), pp. 1761-1762. Kerr, R. "New Way to Ask the Experts: Rating Radioactive Waste Risks," Science, vol.274, (November1996), pp. 913-914. Bolt, Bruce A. Earthquakes (New York: W. H. Freeman and Company how to write a phd proposal in, 1988). The first goal of my research is to explain the criteria for determining whether a nuclear waste repository is suitable. For example, will the rock structure be able to withstand human invasion in the future [Clark, 1997]? What will happen if the waste containers corrode and do not last as long as predicted? Will the natural setting contain the waste? To achieve this goal, I will rely on "Background on 40 CFR Part 197 Environmental Standards for Yucca Mountain" [Clark, 1997], the DOE Yucca Mountain home page [1997], and the book Understanding Radioactive Waste [Murray, 1989]. Because the primary readers for my proposed literature review are engineering students who are probably not familiar with the theories behind earthquakes, I will have to provide selected background information frommy sources. These engineering students already know that earthquakes are devastating. They also know that if earthquakes could be predicted, people would be able to prepare for them and lives would be saved. However, they may not know the different methods of predicting earthquakes. My intent is to inform these students of three methods of predicting earthquakes. How do you come up with a thesis statement? A thesis is the result of a lengthy thinking process and careful deliberation after preliminary research. Formulating a thesis is not the first thing you do after reading a writing assignment. Before you develop an argument on any topic, you have to collect and organize evidence, look for possible relationships between known facts (such as surprising contrasts or similarities), and think about the significance of these relationships. Once you do this thinking, you will probably have a “working thesis,” a basic main idea good essay topics for high school, an argument that you think you can support with evidence but that may need adjustment along the way. Your topic may change somewhat as you write, so you may need to revise your thesis statement to reflect exactly what you have discussed in the paper. What should your paper topic be? Select a course-related topic. I suggest you write about an area that most interests you and in which you might already have some background knowledge. What do you want to learn more about? What are you interested in? Avoid choosing a topic that bores you. Sustained interest in your topic is important, as a topic that bores you makes for a boring paper. It is unlikely you will be able to fool the reader into believing you liked a topic that you didn’t actually like. What is the purpose of the thesis statement? The thesis statement guides you, enabling you to focus your research paper and outline what you will write. It allows you to clarify your thinking and determine what is relevant and irrelevant as you do your research. Your research paper must be thesis-driven. A high school level “report” will not receive a passing grade. The thesis must pull together the analysis that follows. Your thesis statement must be specific – it should cover only what you will discuss in your research paper and must be supported with specific evidence. The thesis statement usually appears at the end of the first paragraph of a paper. Early in your paper I should be able to locate the thesis statement. If I ask you “Where is the thesis statement?” you should be able to point to it immediately.
